The Mock Newbery Club skyped with John Schumacher, Ambassador for School Libraries for Scholastic, 2014 Newbery Committee member, and @MrSchuReads on Twitter. John very kindly took time out of his day to talk to our group about the Newbery Medal and the books selected when he served on the committee. He also showed the group many of the books on his shelves in his office along with a few dolls/animals of famous book characters, like Harry Potter and Babymouse!
The Mock Newbery group also talked to him about the five books they are currently reading for their Mock Newbery: Fuzzy Mud by Louis Sachar, Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate, Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt, Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson, and Like a River: A Civil War Novel by Kathy Cannon Weichman. The students were so very excited to talk about these books with John. They were very surprised that he has not read Like a River, so they all insisted that he read it, and soon! We promised to let John know which book our club chose to win when we announce our winner on January 12.
John had a few books that he thinks should win the Newbery in 2017 and showed those books to us: Pax by Sara Pennypacker, Booked by Kwame Alexander, and Raymie Nightingale by Kate DiCamillo. The group was so excited about the books that John talked to them about and are now eager to get their hands on those books themselves!
A special thank you to John Schumacher (@MrSchuReads on Twitter) for continuing to inspire students to read, even from far away.
